Artist's Statement
“Listening to Wood and Stone” is a current body of artworks that evolved from my lifetime interest in collecting pieces of driftwood and interesting stones. About twenty years ago, I began to experiment with various processes to creatively unite the two materials into sculptural forms. Respecting the diversity of textures, implied movements and their overall mass provided by nature, I create a subtle balance of implied energies between the wood and the stone. The tilt and attitude of the combined forms allows them to assume an unexpected figurative appearance. For me the impression of the figure and its attitude in three-dimensional space embody a brief narrative, or perhaps a spiritual significance, which I generally express in individual poetic titles.
